Shoggoth Under The Bed (180 words)

“Mummmm! There’s a Shoggoth under the bed!”

“Nonsense, dear, there’s no such thing as Shoggoths.”

“There IS and it’s all gooey and bubbly and covered in eyes!”

“Go to sleep, dear, there really is no Shoggoth under the bed.”

“Daaaaad! There IS a Shoggoth under the bed!”

“C’mon now, let me have a look… see? Nothing there but your old bunny slippers.”

“But there IS a Shoggoth under the bed and it has fangs and snakey slimy tentacles ALL over it!”

“Let me put the night light on and go to sleep, Billy. There’s nothing there.”

“MUUUUM! DAAAAD! THERE IS a Shoggoth under the bed and it’s HUNGRY!”

“Oh darling, it’s fine: look, we’ll leave the door open and the light on… there’s really no Shoggoth under the bed and now it’s our bedtime too. Goodnight.”

And then there was a squishing and sloshing, an awful crunching and munching, flapping and flopping from his parents’ bedroom and then…

…silence.

And Billy muttered: “I never said it was under MY bed!”

    1. Thanks ever so much, Matt! 😀 Had a lot of fun condensing this story down under 200 words – glad my unintended Aesop resonated so well with you!
Will definitely be revisiting H. P. Lovecraft territory again soon 🦑
